5 Things You Should NOT Do On Your Winter Break after your First Semester of Law School

Going home after an extremely stressful month of endless studying was an, for the lack of a better word, “enlightening” experience.  Here are five things you should not do during your winter break after your first semester of law school if you wish to keep yourself and everyone around you sane.

1.      Do not talk about your final exams
This may seem like a given considering how much law schools seem to stress the importance of “letting go” after finals are done with.  However, sometimes a particular event will occur that will remind you of the one fact pattern on your Contracts exam.  DO NOT TAKE THE BAIT.  Stop thinking about the facts and arguments and enjoy the few weeks of freedom that you have.  Also, no one cares.

2.      Do not get into long winded arguments with friends and loved ones
You aren’t some special law genius after your first semester of law school.  You shouldn’t act like it.  Stop getting into arguments with everyone over whether they committed a civil wrong or should have efficiently breached a contract with their little sister.  Oh yeah, no one cares.

3.      Do not go out every night just because you have the free time to do so
You must have fun.  But spending your life savings on cocktails and cab rides is not recommended.  Just because you were extremely stress for a bit doesn’t mean you should totally YOLO only to realize that YODO (you only die once).  Get some sleep and get ready for the next semester.

4.      Do not stop checking email because you are “so over” law school
It may disgust you just to think about the words “law” and “school.”  Nevertheless, do not all ongoing conversations with professors or future employers.  Remember, just because you are on “break” doesn’t mean everyone else is.

5.      Do not stress about anything
Seriously. Stop worrying.  Whatever happened last semester has already happened and cannot be changed.  Deal with it.  Also, don’t get into drama or issues with people during your winter break.  Who cares what that dude from your hometown, who never left, thinks about your career choices.  Focus on rebuilding and rejuvenating yourself over your break, not worrying about law school or petty issues.
