How do you deal when you’re roommate’s not a law student and she’s LOUD?

She likes to sing Mariah Carey while brushing her teeth. It’s a rare talent, and it echoes sonorously against the walls of the bathroom, out the open door and right into your bedroom as you try to sleep.  She watches hilarious shows on the TV in the living room. And they are FUNNY.  She cooks.  She cleans.  All at ungodly hours…

For the uninitiated, here are some tried and true tips:

1.      Earplugs. Steal a few from the law library and pop them in as you’re trying to drift off to dreamland. The catch: they may entirely block out the sound of your alarm clock tomorrow morning, and it’s possible you’ll arrive (very) late to LRW.
2.      Noise machine app. There are a million of these for free in the app store. You can enjoy the calming sounds of a rainforest, wind chimes, ocean waves, children laughing, etc. The catch: it may actually be near impossible to fall asleep to the calming sounds of a rainforest, wind chimes, ocean waves and/or children laughing.
3.      A fan. The obvious choice. Get it cheap from amazon and pick it up the next day from mail services. Catch: tomorrow morning all of your neatly organized papers will be strewn across the expanses of your dorm room, and you’ll be freezing cold.
4.      Just storm out at 2 am and demand silence. The catch: you might scare her, because you’re acting crazy, your hair’s a mess, and your eyes are all bloodshot and crazy looking. But no worries, you’ve finally grown a pair and voiced your needs, and she’s understanding and happy to comply.

Sweet, sweet (undisturbed) sleep.
